PEACE OF MIND THAT COMES WITH A MEDICAL ALERT DOG

On a warm July day in 1976 Fred and his constant Labrador companion, Barney,* went into the house after a days’ work on the farm. Fred however was not acting normally and quickly collapsed on the floor. His blood sugar level had dropped dangerously low. Fred was a diabetic. Barney tried to lick and nudge his best friend and when that did not work he acted quickly by running through the screen door down the path about three-quarters of a mile to the neighbor’s farm. His excited barking and rushing back and forth to get someone to follow him alerted the neighbors something must be wrong with Fred. They followed the dog home and were able to get help that saved Fred’s life, all thanks to Barney’s actions.

This was the first incident of a Chilbrook Labrador acting as a medical alert helper.
